A crewmember aboard the first Greenpeace campaign to stop nuclear testing in the Aleutian Islands and co-founder of Greenpeace International, Thurston was the cornerstone of the environmental community.

His contribution to environmental campaigning and his humanitarian work mark Lyle Thurston as an example of the best of mankind, and he will be greatly missed.

My thoughts go out to his familiy and close friends.

Last year, Earth Hour was a localised event in Sydney, Australia where the city made a whopping 10.2% energy reduction just by turning lights off. This year it’s global, and who knows what difference we’ll make.

Whether you participate in the event or not, please remember to turn lights off when you don’t need them (like when you leave the room). If we all did them, small actions like these can can add up to one big difference.

Have fun with the lights out ;-)

Greenpeace’s latest report on the environmental impact of technology companies was released yesterday.

Updated quarterly the report is a useful indicator of how highly tech companies regard environmental impact considerations. It’s great to see companies like Samsung and Toshiba leading the field, it’s also reassuring that manufacturers like Apple and Dell are making progress. Making sweeping changes in major corporations is a long-term process and improvements can’t be made overnight, but the fact that more tech companies are starting to make headway is reassuring.

Are you minimising the impact of your technology use? I’d love to hear your suggestions.
